Artist's Statement

I find endless inspiration for my work in the landscapes of Colorado as well as the landscapes of other countries I have visited. The bark of an exotic tree in Nicaragua, the rugged cliffs along the Italian coastline and the eroding canyon walls of Colorado’s Glenwood Canyon all serve to inspire my work.

Through experimentation I discovered that applying texture to a thick cylinder of clay, coating it with a substance that creates a shell-like surface and then expanding the cylinder allowed me to create a variety of textures that opened dramatically as I expanded the form. As I continued to study the shapes, designs and textures in the earth, I began to expand these techniques to better capture and express the various intricacies of our environment.

I enjoy creating textures that long to be touched or caressed, inviting the viewer to handle and examine them, revealing how the image changes with each new angle and change of light. My intention is not to imitate or reproduce what has taken thousands or millions of years to form, but to express the beauty and diversity of our natural world.
